Plaguebearer: Demo 2011

12/07/11  ||  Lord K Philipson

A Swedish death metal demo – how nice. Or not? Well, Plaguebearer (there are least 400 bands calling themselves this, just so you know) pay homage to the old school Swedish way of dong things, but unfortunately they don’t do it completely convincing. I can appreciate the production (it actually kinda blows, no matter how weird that may sound) that gives those simple riffs a nice early Grave vibe. Combine this with some death’n‘roll-ish guitars at times and a very distorted bass and you got yourself Plaguebearer. I can also appreciate the mission of celebrating the past, but there are too many things about this demo that just doesn’t cut it for me, my biggest gripe being vocalist Kaveh’s grunts.

It’s not complete shit though, so if you have a tendency to jack off to old school sounding crap – I guess you can check this out and find a few things you might enjoy. Just don’t expect anything supremely excellent as old Grave, Carnage or Entombed.

3/10: The hearts of these guys are probably in the right places, but the material is not really there. Yet?
